What's New, GIS Day Planning, Storage, Upcoming Meetings, Additional Topics

Attendees:

What's New:

  • Jerry Mount has accepted a position outside the University.
  • GIS TAC will be looking into adding to the group by inviting new GIS related hires from Facilities, Libraries, Informatics. Also Casey from the flood center.
  • Ben Rogers has started advertising the website and ITS GIS Info Center as of September 25th.
  • Adam has been in touch with folks at State Farm. They have a bunch of GIS related internships on the horizon and may come speak to interested students.
  • ITS is going to be buying some iBeacons for evaluation and development in an effort to provide internal wayfinding in some capacity for campus.

Storage:

  • Starting with 1TB and moving up to 3TB over time.
  • There were initial access issues which has since been remedied.
  • Adam has started adding data, but has yet to determining a proper organization structure.
  • Adam requested that Alex provide any University specific base data to put on the drive.

GIS Day:

  • It is coming up. It will be more of GIS Week than just a day. Meetings will be held more often until the event is over.
  • We need to round up speakers and determine when they will be speaking.
  • Adam has two potential speakers. Jeremie has one that might have a schedule conflict. Jeremie will look into other candidates. Alex will invite the folks that map the trees on campus to talk about their method.
  • Event promotion needs to begin by providing event details to be included in http://events.uiowa.edu.
  • Adam will look into getting funds for GIS Day refreshments, snacks.

Additional Topics:

  • The GIS TAC has been encouraged by ITS leadership to get in contact with the CIC in an effort to see how the rest of the Big Ten handles campus-wide GIS.
  • Adam said that Nick is working on GIS related support articles on common issues that could be added to the ITS GIS Info Center.
  • Alex suggested that the following URL be advertised: maps.facilities.uiowa.edu/arcgis/rest
  • It appears the State of Iowa will be passing on the free K-12 ArcGIS License.
  • Adam and others are working on an ArcGIS Online initiative for K-12 instead.
  • Hexagon Geospatial will be licensed by the State! In other words, a lot of data will be available soon. For example statewide 1-meter imagery every two years.
  • Adam wants TAC members to join IGIC (Iowa Geographical Information Council).

Upcoming Meeting:

  • A meeting will be scheduled for next week.
